20:20 contest and tribute to Rod Greenway

On Sunday, 7 December, a day of fun, food and frivolity was shared by a large crowd who gathered to witness Somerville Cricket and Somerville Football Netball Clubs play in a 20:20 contest, followed by Somerville Cricket Club Women’s team v Tyabb.

The Chairmen of Selectors from both the cricket and football clubs were subjected to sledging, bribery and coercion as players from both clubs grappled for selection and bragging rights.

Final scores were locked at 156 runs apiece, although the Somerville Football Netball Club players protested the result, given the distraction when Somerville Cricket Club Committee Member Calypso Dave Simmonds took his playing top off in full view of the capacity crowd.

The event was held to celebrate the life of Somerville Cricket Club Life Member Rod Greenway and was attended by his wife Alison, extended family and friends.

Somerville Women dominate against Tyabb

Later in the afternoon, Somerville Cricket Club’s Women’s Team continued its barnstorming run to take on Tyabb. Currently sitting clear on top of the ladder, Somerville blitzed Tyabb with a comprehensive team effort, 5/185 to Tyabb 10/74.

The Somerville innings was highlighted by a magnificent century from opening batter Julie Fearns. This is the first century to be recorded in the history of the Somerville Women’s team and is a reflection on the influence that Julie has had on the team since its inception.

In another match-winning performance, Captain Katelyn Van Loo dazzled once again to record the outstanding figures of 3/7, to lead the competition with 16 wickets at the miserly average of 2.63.

Somerville Football Netball Club fundraising drive

The demands on sporting clubs to succeed and to be financially viable have never been greater. To this end, Somerville Football Netball Club is controlling its destiny by running a fundraising BBQ over four weeks at Stumpy Gully Christmas Tree Farm.

On the back of a highly successful recruiting campaign, with a number of local players returning to the club, the buy-in from the committee, players and supporters has been nothing short of magnificent as the community has pulled together to raise significant funds.

Above all, both Senior Clubs, Somerville Cricket Club and Somerville Football Netball Club, are committed to engaging their community through participation and social interaction, and the cricket matches between both clubs and the Christmas Tree fundraiser are no better examples of this.
