Letter to the Editor: Council Must Listen – Anne Kruger

Local resident Anne Kruger expresses concern over Council’s handling of the 2025–26 budget, citing blocked debate, poor consultation, and a loss of public trust.

Another chaotic council meeting. Residents were escorted out. The debate shut down. Once again, the Mayor refused a motion of dissent and blocked councillors from amending the budget.

We’re told the community was “consulted”, but just 3,000 responses from a limited survey can’t speak for 160,000 people. Meanwhile, thousands have signed petitions, attended meetings, and voiced serious concerns.

This isn’t just about a 3% rate rise. It’s about trust, broken promises, and decisions that seem to favour a few over the many.

Unity was once the Mayor’s promise. It’s time to return to that, with genuine consultation, genuine respect, and decisions made for the entire Peninsula.

  1. Your comment that “3,000 responses to the survey can not speak for 160,000 people” is interesting.

I don’t have the exact number of residents and ratepayers, but taking your figure of 160,000 they all had the same opportunity to respond and express their concerns to council through the survey.

How many of the residents and ratepayers who are now violently angry with the councillors and council officers for the decisions which have been based on the responses received, actually took the time to express their concerns and comments, and respond to the survey?

  2. I have very little trust in the current Mornington Peninsula Council. Every thing appears to be smoke and mirrors and yet you work for me via rates.
