The incident began around 12.50am on Monday when Highway Patrol officers spotted a grey Ford Focus allegedly speeding along the Monash Freeway in Glen Iris. When police attempted to intercept the vehicle using lights and sirens, the driver reportedly took off at high speed.

The Ford, which is alleged to have been stolen from a Campbell Street property in Frankston on 26 July, was later seen on Heath Mews in Langwarrin at approximately 2.45am.

During an attempted interception, police say the vehicle rammed a police car and fled the scene once more. Officers continued the pursuit as the vehicle travelled along North Road, where stop sticks were successfully deployed at the Warrandyte Road intersection.

The car lost control shortly after and crashed into a barrier near McClelland Drive. The driver fled on foot into nearby scrubland but was tracked and arrested by the Dog Squad.

The Langwarrin man has now been charged with:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Failure to stop on police direction
  • Driving while disqualified
  • Failing to have proper control of a motor vehicle
  • Dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime
  • Possession of a controlled weapon
  • Possession of a drug of dependence

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court today.

Police investigations are ongoing.
