FRANKSTON — A new regional partnership between three key local councils could soon reshape how cross-border issues are tackled across the southeast.
Frankston Mayor Kris Bolam has confirmed that a three-way collaboration is currently in discussion between Frankston City Council, Kingston City Council and Mornington Peninsula Shire. The proposed “Nepean partnership” aims to improve cooperation on regional matters that transcend council boundaries, from infrastructure planning and transport to waste management and economic development.
Speaking to RPP FM, Mayor Bolam said the initiative is set to be presented to Frankston Council in September.
“This is about creating a platform where we can deal with cross-border issues in a more collaborative way,” Bolam said.
“In a time where local governments are being challenged — from cost shifting to financial viability — these partnerships make a lot of sense.”
While final details are still being negotiated, Bolam confirmed that he and Frankston’s CEO are actively engaging with their counterparts in neighbouring councils to progress the plan.
The move comes amid growing pressure on councils to find efficiencies and improve service delivery while facing budgetary constraints and increasing demands from residents.
If adopted, the Nepean collaboration could serve as a model for future regional partnerships across Victoria.
