Grassroots group prepares for community gathering at Hotel Lona

Frankston local Scott Carson says men across Australia need more spaces to speak openly about their struggles, as he prepares to host an International Men’s Day event in the city on Wednesday evening.

Mr Carson, who mentors men and runs support programs in Frankston, told STPL News the gathering at Hotel Lona is designed to give men a chance to connect, reflect and support one another. The event will be non-alcoholic, with organisers wanting attendees to take part in a clear and supportive environment.

“Last year there were only nine International Men’s Day celebrations or functions in Australia. We were one of them,”

he said.

The event will run from 6.30 pm to 9 pm and include group discussions, guest speakers and an emphasis on what Mr Carlson describes as positive human interaction”.

A focus on connection, not labels

Mr Carson said he avoids describing the gathering as a celebration of masculinity.

“I don’t likr the word masculinity because I hate being defined by something. Come and see what positive human interaction is,”

He said the aim is to create safe, practical environments where men can grow together, share experiences and build resilience.

“We all need places so we can grow together,”

he said.

Too many men don’t have a voice

Mr Carson said many men in the community feel unable to speak openly about challenges in their lives.

“Do you know how many blokes don’t have a voice anymore? And they’re too scared to say anything,”

He said his work focuses on mentoring local men to become the best versions of themselves” by developing accountability and taking small, practical steps toward change.

“Resilience is not bought and it is not given. You earn it,”

Said Scott.

Lived experience shapes the program

Mr Carson discussed parts of his personal background during the interview, including a period of homelessness as a teenager and experiences that continue to guide the work he now does with others.

He said his organisation supports men dealing with issues such as trauma, family breakdown, isolation and uncertainty.

“Every single situation you’ve gone through in life is here to help you grow, if you’re brave enough to explore it,”

He also outlined his approach to working with young men, emphasising the importance of positive role models and staying actively involved in their lives.

Building a hub for men in Frankston

Mr Carson said his long-term goal is to establish a dedicated hub in Frankston where men can gather, talk and learn from one another.

“We want to create a hub in Frankston where men can come,”

He said support from local organisations and Frankston City Council has helped his group expand its activities and plan future programs.
