Vehicle clocked at more than 200 km/h before being found abandoned in Cheltenham
A 44-year-old Seaford man has been arrested after allegedly driving at speeds above 200 kilometres an hour through Melbourne’s southern suburbs early Thursday morning.
Police allege a white Holden Commodore was first detected speeding along Beach Road shortly after 1.30 am before being spotted again in Brighton. Officers later found the vehicle abandoned in a car park on Jamieson Street in Cheltenham, where its occupants had fled on foot.
A search of the area led police to the driver, who was taken into custody without incident. Officers allegedly located car keys, a quantity of what is believed to be a drug of dependence, and several suspicious items inside the vehicle — including a machete, a balaclava, tools described as house-breaking implements, and a device commonly used to steal cars.
The Commodore has been impounded, and police are continuing to investigate the incident.
The man is expected to be interviewed in relation to multiple offences, including dangerous driving, drug possession and being in possession of tools used for theft.
