A Hastings man has died after being struck by an illegally modified electric bike on Frankston-Flinders Road earlier this week.
As reported by STPL News earlier today, the 69-year-old pedestrian was hit while walking home from grocery shopping at around 6:40pm on 12 May. He was airlifted to hospital in critical condition but died from his injuries on Tuesday afternoon.
Victoria Police confirmed the e-bike involved had been illegally modified, capable of reaching speeds up to 90 km/h. It reportedly lacked proper lighting and was held together with duct tape and cable ties.
The 24-year-old rider, also from Hastings, sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital. Police say he is yet to be interviewed and is expected to face multiple charges. Investigators from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are considering more serious offences in light of the man’s death.
The incident has raised ongoing concerns about unregulated electric bike modifications and public safety on local roads.

Now that you describe the bike it sounds very familiar. I believe I saw the young man who rode it to Coles recently. It was literally home made, wrapped in many layers of duct tape and cable ties. The pedals were removed from an ordinary bicycle and the batteries added.
My condolences to the deceased man’s family and friends. Such a sad story. ?
Is the rider still in hospital?
I feel sorry for everyone impacted, first responders, paramedics, witnesses. So traumatic for all.
