A 19-year-old P1 probationary driver from Frankston South has had his car impounded and is facing multiple charges after allegedly being caught speeding at nearly 200km/h in Dingley Village.
Police from Moorabbin Highway Patrol intercepted the Ford Falcon about 7.30pm on Sunday, 8 June, after it was allegedly detected travelling at 198km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.
The driver was interviewed at the scene and is expected to be charged on summons with offences including conduct endangering life, dangerous driving, and other traffic-related matters.
His vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days, incurring towing and storage costs of $1,002.
The incident occurred during the statewide Operation Regal, a Victoria Police enforcement campaign targeting risky driver behaviour over the King’s Birthday long weekend. The operation aims to reduce road trauma following a devastating May, which recorded 36 road fatalities — the highest for the month since 2004.
Operation Regal runs from 12.01am Friday 6 June to 11.59pm Monday 9 June.
Police are urging motorists to slow down, drive responsibly and consider the consequences of dangerous driving.
