A 55-year-old Blairgowrie man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a road safety camera operator and damaging their vehicle on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway Extension in Rosebud late last month.
Police say the incident occurred around 1.30pm on Monday, 29 September, when the man spotted the mobile camera car parked along the freeway extension. He allegedly approached the vehicle, verbally abused the operator, assaulted them, and caused damage to the car before driving off in his own vehicle.
Cameras Capture the Offender
Despite fleeing the scene, the man didn’t escape detection for long. Police said “camera cars by their very nature are covered in cameras,” which allowed officers to quickly identify the alleged offender using recorded footage from the vehicle itself.
The man has been charged with criminal damage, threats to kill, and assault, and has been bailed to appear before the Dromana Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
Police Appeal for Dash Cam Footage

Investigators are appealing for anyone with dash cam footage from the Mornington Peninsula Freeway Extension in Rosebud between 1.30pm and 2.00pm on the day of the incident to come forward.
