Over $52K Raised for Rye Junior Footy Club Volunteer After Heart Failure
The community of Rye is rallying behind a much-loved local dad after a sudden and severe heart failure left him hospitalised and fighting for his life.
Tane Rongonui, 40, was rushed to hospital just weeks ago with what his cardiologist described as the “worst case” of heart failure seen in over 30 years. Once a hands-on father-of-three — who just days earlier had been camping with his boys and picking up his daughter from ballet — Tane now faces a long and uncertain medical journey.
Doctors revealed his heart was functioning at just 7 per cent – a dangerously low ejection fraction. He remains in hospital undergoing intensive treatment, with specialists considering the urgent implantation of a cardiac defibrillator (ICD) and, potentially, a future heart transplant.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by friends describes Tane as “the first to show up” — known for his humour, heart, and generosity. Now, it’s the community’s turn to return that support.
“With three young kids — Isabelle, Harrison and Tommy — and Jess doing everything she can to keep things together, the load is immense,” the fundraiser states.
“They’re not ones to ever ask for help. That’s why we’re asking for them.”
So far, $52,422 has been raised from 178 donations, more than doubling the original goal of $20,000. The funds will help the Rongonui family navigate the financial burden of lost income, medical costs, travel, and the day-to-day realities of life turned upside down.
“Tane won’t be able to return to work for the foreseeable future, and as every tradie knows, that hits hard,” the campaign says.
“Every dollar donated gives the family some breathing space, allowing them to focus on what matters most: healing, recovery, and staying together.”
The Rye Junior Football Club, where Tane volunteers as a water runner for the Under 9s, has also called on the community to support one of their own.
“Tane Rongonui, a loyal volunteer who runs water for the team every week, is currently in hospital battling severe heart failure. At just 40 years old, with three young kids, Tane faces a long and uncertain road ahead,” the club posted.
“The Rongonui family are the first to help others — now it’s our turn to support them. Let’s show up for Tane like he’s always shown up for our club.”
At the time of writing, the GoFundMe page continues to receive donations and messages of support. Community members are encouraged to contribute or share the link.
