$4.25 Million in Community Funding Now Open

Mornington Peninsula Shire has opened applications for its latest Community Investment Funding program, with $4.25 million on offer to support local projects, events and initiatives over the next financial year.

The funding is designed to back community groups, not-for-profits, businesses and individuals delivering projects that strengthen the Peninsula’s social, environmental and economic wellbeing. Streams include grants for climate action, heritage protection and creative industries, plus sponsorships for larger events and subsidies such as the annual Seniors Festival.

However, the launch comes amid ongoing concern over the Shire’s recent funding decisions. Earlier this year, Council faced backlash for slashing $480,000 from its arts budget and pulling support from the Dolphin Research Institute’s schools ambassador program, which had run locally for nearly 30 years. Critics argue these cuts undermine community trust and jeopardise vital local initiatives.

Applications for this round opened on 13 July and will stay open until June next year, or until funds run out. Funding is competitive, with projects assessed on how well they align with the Shire’s Council and Wellbeing Plan, as well as their long-term impact and value for money.

The Shire will also host grant-writing workshops across the Peninsula in the coming weeks to help applicants prepare stronger submissions.

In past years, this funding program has helped restore local halls, supported volunteer conservation projects, and brought events that boost local tourism. Council data shows previous rounds have also unlocked substantial volunteer hours and additional community contributions.

Eligible applicants must be based in, or delivering their project within, the Mornington Peninsula Shire. More details on funding streams, criteria and upcoming workshops are available on the Shire’s website.
